Project Start

At this point, you have the capital and you are dying to get started, Time for the Project Start.

The first thing is to organise somewhere to work, this may be your home for a smaller project to several offices for the larger project. Working from home is not always the best idea unless you are working on an internet project. You need discipline to work from home, family and friends can easily be disrupting influences even unintentionally. I suggest working strict hours each day, if interruptions cause work to backup, then make up the shortfall in hours at the weekend.

The first project start activity for larger projects is to recruit a project manager; probably by this stage, you have a candidate in mind. One word of warning is that if your project is in another culture or very different areas recruit someone with experience. Whilst experienced project managers are not cheap, a bad project manager can cost much more in overruns, poor budget control and overspends.

Although in reality, project planning is ongoing and it is more a matter of tuning the timings and resources affected by changes as the project progresses. A medium size project would need at least one full time planner working closely with the project manager.
